Dominican Republic - A Real Wedding - Sarah and Ryan

I was excited about posting this real wedding as it is the first abroad wedding we have had on The Life Bath. Sarah and her husband got married in the Dominican Republic and it just looks amazing.

When did you and your husband meet?

We met May 2008. My bank hol Monday plans had fallen through so I went to see my grandad at Blyth Yacht Club. Whilst having a drink on my grandads boat I was introduced to Ryan's parents. My grandad and Ryan's parents took it upon themselves to set us up and went and picked him up.

Ryan was hungover and although he thought the blonde girl at the bar was fit, he couldn't be bothered to make conversation. Tipsy Sarah had other ideas. We ended up going elsewhere, I fell over, had an egg on my head and won Ryan's heart.

How long were you together before you got engaged and how long were you engaged for?

We were together a year before Ryan proposed then got married 18 months later.

How did he propose?

We had gone for a pint at the Melton Constable then for a walk along the beach. As we were walking along, Ryan suddenly got down on one knee and popped the question. It was like something from a movie as as soon as Ryan went down on his knee, it started to snow. Was soooo romantic. We went to the Astley Arms and bought a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

Where did you get married?

We got married at the Majestic Colonial hotel in the Dominican Republic. We both love the sun and dreamt of getting married on the beach. We only had family and close friends so we had another do when we returned to the UK. This was at the Village Hotel.

How many venues did you visit before you found the one?

We initially wanted to get married in the Maldives but u can only renew your vows there. We then looked at Bacardi Island before agreeing on the Majestic. It looked amazing and ticked all the boxes.

We were initially just going to have an evening do in the UK but when we looked at the Village, it was such a good deal to have an all day reception. It meant we could enjoy the whole day with those who couldn't make it to our actual wedding and meant I could wear my wedding dress again.

Who went with you to find your wedding dress?

I visited a number of venues with my mam, mother in law and friend Anna but the day I found THE dress I was with my mam. As soon as i saw it, never mind tried it on I knew it was the one.

What was the theme of your wedding?

When we returned to the UK, we kept with the Dominican theme. All the stationary had sand and pebbles on, we also had bright colours for the flowers and table decorations to fit with the Caribbean theme.

What part of the planning was the most exciting for you?

All of it. I love doing my research and finding the best, most unique items at the best prices.

Did you do any DIY projects for your wedding?

No, I'm not the most crafty person so I found what I wanted and got someone else to do it. The only thing I guess was I made special favours for the kids. I know how bored children can get so to keep them entertained, we made special favours with colouring books, quiz books, a book where u had to find wedding things eg the wedding cake, bride etc.

How involved was your fiancé?

He liked being kept informed but left it pretty much down to me.

What was the most stressful part of the wedding planning?

Keeping track of what I'd ordered and what needed doing still whilst remaining in budget.

What entertainment did you have?

We had a Magician during the daytime reception. He went around the tables then did a special show for the children at the end. We had  a disco on the evening.

Did everything go to plan on the big day?

Pretty much although we were going to record the wedding. Rather than paying for a videographer, one of our wedding party offered to film it. We purchased a top of the range camera for this but the guest knocked the pause button so it wasn't recorded. I could have cried.

If that wasn't bad enough, my handbag was stolen on my wedding evening.

If you had any advice for other brides on their big day what would it be?

Relax and make the most of the day as it will fly by.

Where did you go on honeymoon?

As we married abroad, we stayed for a further week.
